High West American Prairie Whiskey 750ML
High West American Prairie Whiskey 750ML

Country: United States
Varietal: Bourbon
Vintage: NV

Whisky Advocate's Distillery of the Year 2016

"I just freaking love this whiskey. It’s complex enough you could sit back and take your time with it, but also bold and flavorful enough to be a daily dram for while you’re doing stuff around the house, watching TV or reading your favorite blog… what ever that might be. Warm, spicy, sweet and savory it’s tasty as can be without being overbearing. Nicely done High West… nicely done." -Josh Peters, The Whisky Jug

Glenrothes Vintage Reserve Single Malt Scotch Whisky 750ML
Glenrothes Vintage Reserve Single Malt Scotch Whisky 750ML

Country: Scotland
Varietal: Scotch Whisky
Vintage: NV

Whisky Advocate's Speyside Single Malt of the Year 2016

"Vintage Reserve is the expression that best epitomizes the Glenrothes Vintage Single Malt philosophy. It contains ten different vintages from the following years: 1989, 1992, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 married together in wood.

The 1989 whisky is said to bring mellow oak and dried fruits to the overall composition, while 1998 whisky accounts for more than 25 percent of the total makeup and gives soft, mature, sweet vanilla notes. The youngest whisky -from 2007- adds lemon citrus character. The overall effect is a beautifully harmonious, complex dram in classic Speyside style.

Purists may prefer individual vintage year bottlings -and 1995, 1998, and 2001 expressions are currently available in the U.S.- but the price of Vintage Reserve makes it an attractive alternative and allows the imbiber to appreciate all the varying facets of this single malt from a range of years in one idiosyncratic, dumpy bottle."

Whisky Advocate's Distiller of the Year 2016

Parker Review:
I threw this in because this distillery in, of all places, Park City, Utah (better known for skiing than high quality spirits), is apparently a fascinating operation. They make a pre-blended Manhattan that is a killer, but the two whiskies I tried included their least expensive, Campfire. It is a silky smooth blend displaying hints of a Highland-like peatiness intermixed with sweet caramel, subtle wood smoke and spice box. The richness, full-bodied flavors and sweet versus spicy flavor profile make this an interesting, delicious sipper. It would be a shame to waste it over ice and mix it as a cocktail. By the way, I have not tasted it, but apparently at the distillery you can purchase their 12-, 16- or 21-year-old rye whiskies, which are hors classe for their category.

Other Reviews:
Palate The bourbon and rye influence is felt first, balancing honey, dried golden fruits, and vanilla with a spark of the rye spices. Theres a bit more zip in the spice quotient on the palate. As these flavors fade, the smoke and peat adds a great deal of interest and needed complexity. Finish Quite fruity with lingering peat and a smoky quality. Overall Leave it to a bunch of whiskey outlaws in Utah to spit in the eye of conventional whiskey blending. The result is without question one of the most groundbreaking whiskeys of recent years. Overly dramatic? I dont think so. High West has managed to mingle (Jim Rutledge term) global whiskeys into something that stands on its own. Its not overly complex, but it works well together. I know what you may be thinking. This is a gimmick right? No, its not. Rather than be heavy handed with the peat, High West has shown a great deal of restraint with Campfire. The result is a whiskey that is livened up and made far more interesting with a kiss of peat. Unlike the name implies theres no fire here, just great whiskey. Sour Mash Manifesto Rating 9.0 (Superb/Outstanding)

Whisky Advocate's Distillery of the Year 2016

Parker Review:
A sensational offering of a younger rye blended with a much older rye made from both rye and barley malt mashbill (53% rye and 37% corn), this is a sweet, smoky, spicy, flamboyant whiskey that is full, rich and intense, but not the least bit harsh. Just about everything I have tasted from High West in Park City, Utah is impressive.

Other Reviews:
A blend of two rye whiskies, a 6 year old made from 95% rye and a 16 year old made from 80% rye. These are very high percentages of rye, even for a straight rye whisky which only needs to contain 51% rye to meet the definition. It was very clever to marry the vibrancy of a younger whiskey with the depth of a mature whisky. Thanks to the high rye content, this whisky is very spicy, with cinnamon, crisp mint and fennel. Underlying sweet notes of caramel, molasses, vanilla, macaroon, cocoa, and candied fruit provide a calming effect and enhance the whiskeys complexity. But, in the end, the rye is the victor, emerging with a vengeance and giving the whisky a bold, warming spice finish. Great price, compared to other premium rye whiskeys. Malt Advocate

Nikka Yoichi Single Malt 750ML
Nikka Yoichi Single Malt 750ML

Country: Unknown
Varietal: Scotch Whisky
Vintage: NV

This is a single malt from the Yoichi distillery, Nikka's first distillery built in 1934. The founder Masataka Taketsuru chose Yoichi in Hokkaido because of the similar environmental conditions to Scotland, where he learned whisky making. Yoichi single malt has pleasant peaty notes and smokiness originating from the traditional direct coal-fired distillation as well as a briny hint delivered by the sea breeze during the aging process.

Whisky Advocate's Japanese Whisky of the Year 2016

"Nikka Whisky's Yoichi Single Malt is a new expression and a rare breed as the only surviving Yoichi in the U.S. market. This year's award recipient typifies the classic maritime and peaty elements of the Hokkaido distillery. A compelling nose of black earthy peat, smoldering fires, a turned-out pocket of briny seashells, whole lime, lemon twist, sugared orange, ground ginger, and licorice. Silky smooth on the tongue, with light, fruity sweetness developing into tangy Spangles, kiwi, and lime juice. The smoky peat is the weft woven through the fruit structure's warp. Menthol, peat, and leather go the distance. This Japanese whisky is delicious, elegant, and affordable; perfectly pitched for cogitative drinking by those loyal to the Japanese single malt scene." -Jonny McCormick, Whisky Advocate

Lagavulin 25 year Single Malt Scotch Whisky 750ML
Lagavulin 25 year Single Malt Scotch Whisky 750ML

Whisky Advocate's Islay Single Malt of the Year 2016

"Most Islays thrive over time in well-chosen sherry casks, and Lagavulin is a prime example. This particular release was the first 25 year old from the distillery since 2002, and it honors the 21 distillery managers to have run Lagavulin through its history. All are named on the packaging, including present incumbent Georgie Crawford, who is a native of Islay (an Ileach) and highly popular holder of the office.

The 16 year old is an excellent whisky, and the price differential between it and the 25 year old will be a significant factor for most potential purchasers, but the 25 year old is fascinating in its complexity, both on the nose and palate. Aromas of new leather, tropical fruits, brittle toffee, and brine are backed by spicy peat smoke, while smoky sherry notes develop in time. It is at its best neat, with the strength being no deterrent. The palate is rich and confident, with sweet peat, brine, muted sherry, figs, gentle spices, tangerines, and lemons. The finish is lengthy, with a barbecue note, malt, and lots of gentle smoke. An extremely fine Lagavulin." -Gavin D Smith, Whisky Advocate
