Now Viewing: Piper Heidsieck
Florens-Luis Heidsieck, the son of a Lutheran minister, starting making wine in 1780 and started his own house in 1785. After his death in 1828, the business was taken over by his nephew, Christian Heidsieck and his cousin Henri Guilaume Piper - which formed the house of Piper-Heidsieck Champagne. Interestingly enough, in 1838 Henri Piper married Christan Heidsieck’s widow.
Piper-Heidsieck Champagne has been associated with fame and fortune for hundreds of years. During the 19th century, fourteen Royal and Imperial courts made the House their official supplier, while today, Piper-Heidsieck is the official Champagne of the Cannes film festival and the Oscars.
Despite producing 5 million bottles of Champagne every year, Piper-Heidsieck purchases grapes from over sixty crus in the region, as they do not own their own vineyards. Piper-Heidsieck are also on the cutting edge of new developments , as recently the house has produced an “altitude resistant” variety of Champagne - designed to counteract the negative effects of airplane conditions on taste buds. Numerous cuvees have also been created to honor top fashion designers of the day.
