Now Viewing: Chateau Duhart Milon

Chateau Duhart Milon is one of the few properties in the 1855 classification of Bordeaux to lack a true chateau. The wine is in fact finished in a large warehouse off the beaten track in Pauillac. This does not seem to have any detrimental effect on quality. In the mid-20th Century things weren't going well at Chateau Duhart Milon. The property went into decline, passing through the hands of five different owners in just a quarter of a century. In 1962, however, the Rothschild family purchased the vineyards of this estate, and standards gradually improved throughout the 1960s and 1970s. From the 1980s the wines have been consistently good, and frequently also very good value. There are just over 165 acres of vineyards, which were widely replanted following their purchase by the Rothschild family. The blend for Chateau Duhart Milon, the grand vin, is a fairly traditional left bank one, with Cabernet Sauvignon 65%, Merlot 30% and Cabernet Franc 5%. Just over 16,000 cases (depending on vintage conditions) of the first wine are produced, the rest being put towards the second wine Moulin de Duhart (about 15,000 cases), and some is sold off for blending as generic Pauillac.
