Now Viewing: Chateau Gruaud Larose
In his book Saint Julien", Bernard Ginestet gives a detailed account of the origins of the estate. The name "Gruaud" derives from the Gruaud brothers, one of whom was a magistrate, the other a man of the cloth. Together they owned 116 hectares of vineyard named Fond-Bedeau but divided the harvest in two, which according to Lawton's archives wines were sold under the names of "Abbé Gruau" and "Chevalier de Gruaud" in the early 18th century. Allegedly the latter was resplendent with a tower built in the middle of the vineyard in order to keep an eye of the vineyard workers and to check any missing vines, whilst out the front stood a tall mast whose national flags signified who was purchasing his wine.
