Now Viewing: Cheval des Andes (Argentina)
High in the mountains, the vineyards of Cheval des Andes are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec along with small parcels of Petit Verdot. (An interesting note: Malbec was a significant varietal in Bordeaux before the phylloxera outbreak in the mid-1800s ravaged the vineyards.) Behind a phenomenal mountainous backdrop the grapes here benefit from the very high altitude that provides a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions through out the year that challenges the vines resulting in a slow long growing season and, ultimately, a beautiful and balanced wine. Cheval des Andes is true to its heritage: while structured and dry with more subdued upfront fruits like a Bordeaux-blend, it also offers ripe tannins, with distinct cedar, cocoa, and spice of an Argentine wine.
