Now Viewing: Chateau Troplong Mondot
Nowadays, the harvest is picked entirely by hand and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats and thereafter undergo malolactic fermentation in oak barrel of which 70% are new oak and 30% are one-year old. Here they mature for 12 to 24 months depending upon the vintage, fined with egg whites and finally bottled. Approximately 8,000 cases of Grand Vin are produced along with 2-3,000 cases of a second label entitled Mondot since the mid-1980's. Château Troplong-Mondot fashions one of the best wines on the Right Bank and you must credit the conviction of Christine Valette who has overseen a complete renaissance in her wines. They can be quite tannic in their youth, but Troplong always seems to balance that with precocious, rich young fruits (the hallmark of Monsieur Rolland) and a sublime balance that elevates the wines above the crowd. Like Château Pichon-Lalande the female proprietor seems to imbue a certain femininity into the wine, a sensuous texture and profundity that can be irresistible. This is a wine that comes highly recommended not just from myself, but from most quarters and fortunately for the consumer, Christine Valette has not succumbed to the avarice of others and prices remain modest.
