Old Speckled Hen English Pub
Our Old Speckled Hen English Pub was designed to capture the mood of a classic, country pub in rural Britain. The interior is warmly welcoming with draped windows and comfortable window seats. Here you can savour an interesting variety of traditional brews from Britain, Ireland, and Scotland like Bass, Tennant’s, Boddington’s, Guinness and Strong Bow Cider. But, one might well say, what an odd name for a pub. However, the name has a long and curious history that can be traced back to an old English brewery and a vintage MG sports car.
Originally founded in 1711, the Morland family brewery is located in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, a town with a history of brewing and malting. In time, the production of MG cars became another important local industry. A one-off 1927 MG canvas-covered saloon, painted gold and flecked with black was referred to by the locals as the “Owd Speckled ‘Un” and the name evolved over the years into “Old Speckled Hen”. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of MG in Abingdon, the folks at the Morland brewery developed a special traditional ale, which out of respect, they named “Old Speckled Hen”.
