Chateau St Pierre

Chateau St Pierre is one of the four St Julien fourth growths listed in the 1855 classification, the other three being Chateau Beychevelle, Chateau Branaire-Ducru andChateau Talbot. Like Chateau Talbot, St Pierre has for many years produced good quality wines which, compared to the St Julien second growths, also offer excellent value for money. The Castelains, owners of Chateau St Pierre up to 1982, originated from Belgian and as a consequence much of the wine was exported to that country. In 1982, however, it was purchased by Henri Martin. I have already discussed Martin's desire to own a classed growth chateau in my profile of another property - which he created along the way - Chateau Gloria. Since the involvement of Henri Martin I think there has been a tangible improvement in quality, which has been continued by his son, Jean-Louis Triaud, after Martin's death. The 1995 vintage in particular is testament to this. The vineyards of Chateau St Pierre lie just outside the town of Beychevelle, near the boundary of the St Julien appellation. Near neighbours include Chateau Beychevelle, Chateau Branaire-Ducru and Chateau Gruaud-Larose. There are plenty of old vines here which helps explain the deep colour, full body and creamy texture to be found in these wines. The wine has a cuvaison between two and four weeks following temperature-controlled fermentation, and 50% new oak is used each year. The wine is fined and filtered before bottling. Thegrand vin is Chateau St Pierre, of which there are about 5000 cases produced each year. There is no second wine, and what is rejected is sold in bulk to local merchants. One last point. Like a number of Bordeaux properties Chateau St Pierre has undergone a change of name here of there. It was previously known as Chateau St Pierre Sevaistre.
