Chateau Meyney

You know, the northern commune of Saint Estèphe gets a rum deal when it comes to Bordeaux. Since it lacks the superstar First Growths, people tend to forget that it can be a source of well-priced, well-crafted clarets with an unerring ability to age: not just the "big names" such as Cos d`Estournel or Montrose. Château Meyney is one Château that consistently makes great wine and deserves more kudos than it actually receives.

History

Records refer to Meyney as "Couvent des Feuillants" or "Prieuré des Couleys": it was a convent, as can be assumed from its overtly monastic courtyard. It is one of the elder statesmen of the Médoc with records mentioning it in 1662. Since 1919 is has been owned by the Cordier family and in 1978 the respected oenologist Georges Pauli has overseen the vinification.
