Now Viewing: Domaine Ehrhart
This domaine is located in the small village of Wettolsheim, about 5 km from Colmar. The Ehrhart family has been tending vines and making wine in this region of Alsace since 1725. Current proprietors Philippe and Corinne Ehrhart own and farm 21 hectares spread throughout ten different communes, including four hectares of Grand Cru vineyards. Eugene Ehrhart, Philippe's grandfather, began farming his vineyards organically after the war, believing this to be the key to producing better wines. Through three generations the commitment to promoting and maintaining a diverse eco-system in the vineyards has grown, and today all of the wines produced at the domaine are certified organic by the French governement. The vineyard work is done mostly by family members, including Philippe’s father François, as well as by his son Florian. At harvest all of the fruit is picked by hand, and each parcel is vinified separately. The grapes are taken immediately after picking to the winery and pressed. Philippe is able to regulate both the duration and the amount of pressure with a pneumatic press, allowing him to extract the maximum aromatics while retaining the freshness of each varietal. Fermentation is in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, and the wines rest on their lees for up to six months before bottling. The Domaine Ehrhart wines show wonderful purity and elegance.
