The Fernando Pighin Wine Estate, a leader in the Friuli DOC Grave and DOC Collio production zones, is the producer of one of the most highly regarded Pinot Grigios on the international markets.
Pighin’s story begins in 1963, when brothers Luigi, Ercole and Fernando purchased a 200 hectare estate in Risano, in the Friuli Grave D.O.C. area, which belonged to a noble friulan family. After a radical reworking of the estate and the creation of vast vineyards and orchards, the new company cent was built including offices and modern cellars. 1968 saw the acquisition of the company in Spessa di Capriva, in the Collio D.O.C. area, comprising 30 hectares of vineyards and a vinification cellar, which was completely revamped and properly equipped. This acquisition guaranteed the company a production range which covers two of the most renowned production areas of Friuli Venezia Giulia and of Italy. The company vinifies only grapes coming from its own estates.
Pighin's vineyards are in Friuli's best areas, actually some of the best sites in all of Europe. There's gravelly and stony Grave south of Udine and hilly Collio west of Gorizia near the Slovenian (former Yugoslavia) border with minerally rich, archeoceanic soil that was under the Adriatic Sea millions of years ago. Pighin has one of largest private estates in Grave, and one of the top five in Collio. Among whites, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Tocai Friulano, and Pinot Blanc are produced . The reds grown are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Refosco.
