Now Viewing: Chateau Rieussec
Originally owned by Carmelite monks, but the Revolution soon put paid to that. It was sold by a M. Mareilhac who on his death, passed it to Charles Crepin and then to Paul Defolie. Defolie's tenure was short. The property then passed thru a number of owners, suffered from under-investment, and fell into delapidation. In 1971 supermarket magnate Albert Vuillier took control, lived in the Chateau, and invested by replanting some of the rundown vines. He produced a number of very good wines during his time there. In 1984 he sold it to the Lafite-Rothschild Group. Since then it has been under the direction of Charles Chevallier, with continued investment. This is now among the top producers of Sauternes.
