2003 Etude Merlot Napa Valley 750ML

A cool, wet spring and unpredictable flowering season led to lower yields in the 2003 vintage. The positive outcome is reflected in the concentration in the resulting wines. Ripening was fairly even during the last of August and the beginning of September. Many vineyards were poised to pick at perfect ripeness when a heat spike changed the landscape over the course of a weekend and we were able to capture exactly what we needed before the heat turned against us. The 2003 vintage wines are soft in extract and show early elegance. While the 2002 vintage wines revolved around dark fruits the 2003 wines focus more on red fruits and creamy textures that are inviting and easy to enjoy. Intriguing notes of milk chocolate, wild berries and hints of roasted coffee beans lead to a medium-bodied entry filled with mocha and black cherries. Well balanced and structured, the tannins are ripe, round and mouth coating without being dry. Complex layers of Raspberry liqueur, café au lait, black plum and cassis are supported by hints of roast and brown spices.
