Long before Chardonnay was widely produced throughout the United States, a small band of vintners from Santa Maria were experimenting with this classic varietal. They discovered that Santa Maria's long, cool growing season and maritime influences create Chardonnay wines of greater dimension. Our Reserve reflects these qualities, and is tinged with the scent of spun sugar, Meyer lemon, fresh pineapple and golden honey. The grapes for our 2004 Santa Maria Valley Chardonnay RESERVE came from two different vineyards in the Santa Maria Valley appellation. After being pressed and settled. the juice was barrel fermented in a mixture of new (84%) and older French oak barrels. After primary fermentation was completed, the Chardonnay then went through a partial (50%) malolactic fermentation. Then we stirred the lees over a 4 month period and then let everything settle down for a total of 9 months in barrel. The wine was bottled on July 18th, 2005 and released on September 1st. Only 302 cases were produced.
Parker Review: Slightly more complex and fullerbodied than the regular bottling is the 2005 Chardonnay Reserve. Hints of white currants, fresh sweet corn, citrus oil, and rose petals emerge from this complex, medium to fullbodied Chardonnay. A subtle touch of new oak and a long, rich finish are also apparent. Drink it over the next 5 to 6 years.
