Only nine barrels were produced from an east-facing site that Guffens feels is the heart of this wonderful terroir. This great grand cru shares not only the richness of the vintage but also pin-point balance, despite its almost palate-staining density. Great minerality, wonderful freshness. A textbook definition of perfect. Each white Burgundy is the quintessential expression of Chardonnay—lush, sweet fruit perfectly balanced with good acidity and diamond-cut precision. “I've never known wines with such richness, precision of fruit and freshness, since the 1989 vintage,” Guffens exclaimed during a recent trip to his cellars.
Tanzer Review: Pale yellow color. Much more stony on the nose than the Meursaults but also warm. Fat and sweet in the mouth but with a fiery applejack character carrying through to a rather aggressive finish. Perhaps better than its showing today, but I find too much Calvados and scotch character here.
