2001 Chateau Margaux 750ML

Deeply colored. Lovely toasty oak nose is somewhat reticent, but offers enough for us to know we like it, as it craftily balances red and black fruit flavors. Big, tannic, youthful, and chocolaty rich in the mouth. This is an elegant, silky, refined, and spicy Margaux with terrific fruit lurking beneath the wine's impressive structure. Because of its youth and unevolved state, it's hard to pinpoint specific flavors, but the 2001 nonetheless makes us smile. The acidity is very good, helping to create wonderful mouth feel. Above all, the finish was consistent and stayed on the palate for a long, long time. Clearly the 2001 needs time to round out, but it's already a winner. Factoring in the price, this has to be the best "value" Château Margaux. -Robert Parker
