Parker Review: The finest Cabernet Franc to emerge south of San Francisco is Jonatas 2007 El Alma de Jonata, a blend of 89% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot cropped at 1.44 to 2.2 tons of fruit per acre. Ethereal floral notes intermixed with notions of black raspberries, blueberries, and graphite are present in the aromas and flavors. Although it exhibits noteworthy concentration as well as endearing texture, richness, and intensity, it is not heavy, but represents a quintessential expression of how Cabernet Franc can provide penetrating aromas and flavors without the sense of force and weightiness of Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. With striking elegance, purity, and balance, it is reminiscent of what Cheval Blanc might taste like if it were located in the Santa Ynez Valley! It will drink well for 10-15 years. A seriously-styled Merlot will only be released in years where the Merlot fruit cooperates fully with Mother Nature. Tanzer Review: Glass-staining ruby. Pungent dark fruits and flowers on the nose, with complicating notes of licorice, pipe tobacco and minerals. Spicy, palate-staining blackcurrant and bitter cherry flavors are enlivened by juicy acidity and pick up exotic floral and fruitcake qualities in the mid-palate. Large-scaled but structured, with excellent finishing clarity and sweet, sappy persistence. Shows the potential for this variety in a warm climate and from a hot vintage. | ||||
