Product Information:

Last year marked the debut commercial vintage (2008) from president of Chateau Latour Frédéric Engerer’s project in the Rhone, Domaine de Fontbonau. The project is a collaboration between Engerer and his childhood friend Jérôme Malet, who runs the Domaine Sarda-Malet in Roussillon. Now, with one vintage under their belt, this rare wine is truly starting to sing. It also helps that the 2009 Rhone vintage itself turned out to be “Extraordinary” according to Robert Parker, and this Fontbonau is one of the great wines of the vintage. If Engerer’s historic turnaround at Latour is any indication—where he took the storied Bordeaux first growth to new heights—this $35 Cotes du Rhone will soon be a must for collectors.

Intense dark red color with purple hues, Fontbonau 2009 is characterized on the nose by a complex combination of red fruits, berries and spicy aromas. On the palate, a powerful structure with lots of finesse supports a gourmet wine, fruity with hints of roasted coffee beans aromas. Rich and concentrated, this vintage offers a nice balance and excellent length.
