With everyone raving about the 2005 Bordeaux vintage, is it time to jump onboard the bandwagon so to say and start stocking your cellar for your grandkids? While it has been almost unanimous by critics how great the vintage is, Robert Parker Jr. has been one of the last to give his full report and has been trying to keep the hype down by downplaying the certainty of the vintage.
But, with the release of Robert Parker's latest 2005 Bordeaux report titled, "Is 2005 the Perfect Vintage?" one can't help but get the hint about how truly amazing this vintage is. The enthusiasm in almost every Parker review on the '05 Bordeaux’s while well thought out and articulate, are as reserved as can be, but even while reserved, his consistent scores of 95-100 points for countless wines should be testament for how great this vintage truly is! Parker testifies that while it is a great vintage, one cannot compare it to other vintages for its dry growing season with warm conditions. With such growing conditions, he generalizes the wines as follows: "One can safely generalize that many 2005 red Bordeaux possess (1) the highest tannin levels ever measured, (2) the highest dry extracts and concentration ever measured, (3) the highest natural alcohol levels ever measured, and, an anomaly, (4) surprisingly fresh, lively acid levels and reasonably modest pH’s. What does all this mean, and how did it happen? " - RP With the northern Medoc getting the highest tannins, these are age defying wines that could last up to 50+ years! With each region having its own unique conditions, the overall consensus is that while 2005 is an amazing year, just like every other year, you should be thoughtful in what you buy. Wine is an investment. An investment in your future, in the pleasure of your life, in the happiness of your friends. With these wines not expected to start drinking until 2015 for the most part, a well thought out buying decision is your best friend. |
